women of faith in columbus ohio!

we had a blast at women of faith in columbus this weekend! the good friends and good food alone was great, but there was also an amazing lineup for us at nationwide arena:
lisa welchel (yes, blair from the facts of life, and a scrapbooker too!), steven curtis chapman (who won the dove award for artist & songwriter of the year just the night before!), mandisa (who rocked the house and has such a great story involving simon!), sandi patty (eat your heart out mom!), marilyn meberg (who i so want to be my grandma!), luci swindoll (who amie leaned over and said i would be like when i grow up because she doesn't care about what people think either - i can only hope to be half as cool as luci!), patsy clairmont (so funny and just a riot!), sheila walsh (700 club, heart to heart, and a great accent!), allison allen (a very talented actress), and steve arterburn (the founder of WOF!). amazing i tell you!
a very fun part of the weekend for me was following the speakers on twitter and facebook from my phone! they were posting from the event, hotel, dinner, cabs, it was so fun! and a few of my friends and i were posting to each other too (only on breaks of course!) :) it was a very technologically connected thing, which comforted us since none of us brought laptops (and that's very hard for digital scrapbookers)!
the theme was a grand new day, and it sure felt like it! the women of faith worship team was energizing, besides great, and i thoroughly enjoyed singing and worshiping my rear off (can you do that?) though i would have loved to sing a lot more. singing with 17,000 women rocks!
on the WOF website it says this: "Our speakers are real women who share stories from their real lives." and that is so true. all the speakers were very real, very vulnerable and shared info that was personal, and very practical for women. it's easy to look at celebrities (especially Christian ones) and say ah they're famous, they're holy, they're on God's speed dial, they don't have MY kinds of problems. so it was refreshing, almost surprising, but completely encouraging to hear them speaking of broken marriages, financial trouble, addiction, grief, weight struggles, abuse, hurt, not knowing who you are, trying to be who you aren't... all very real issues that the audience obviously connected with. (from the tissues i went through, i obviously connected with much!)
added to all that realness was solid Bible teaching and encouragement, lots of success stories and resources, and a WHOLE LOT OF LAUGHTER! (many of my tissues were needed for laughing, not just crying!)
there are so many inside jokes that you wouldn't get unless you were there, like red scooters, why luci almost got fired, marilyn's book called what's up, lisa taking photos of her injured husband with the paramedics (though my scrapping pals will all get that one!), mandisa's snuggie she wore, and sheila's snuggie she didn't, and so much more! but yeah, you had to be there so i won't tell you about them. ;)
and oh the music! steven curtis chapman, how could that not be amazing? great singer of course, great songs of course, i'm sure you can sing them all, but he seems like such a great husband and father too. you've probably heard of his young daughter maria that he lost last year, so to hear him sing cinderella was just a killer. as an adoptive parent too of course i feel like i have an inside connection to his family, but there weren't many there who took that song in stride! it was good, in a heart-wrenching way, and you could see how much his family was depending on God.
mandisa was awesome and had us all dancing! she did a great diana ross, and tina turner, and whitney houston. of course my deliverer was great to hear/see/sing live! and she has such a great story (great on this side of it anyway) that makes the powerful words of her songs even more meaningful. and it was very cool to hear about some of her experiences on american idol, especially with simon!
goodness, all that, plus great books, bags, necklaces, lunch outside on a GORGEOUS day, and being surrounded the whole time by a GREAT group of girls was just an awesome weekend for me!
here's our whole group at the cheesecake factory (i highly recommend the adam's peanut butter cup fudge ripple cheesecake!). 10 of us stayed with debi's gracious sister-in-law jodi friday, which was so much fun with all the girls! we had some great snacks (pms dessert is so yummy and so fitting for a house full of women!), and great conversations, and not much, but great sleep.
we headed home after the event on saturday and all agreed we'd sure like one more day to enjoy the event and process all the info! i'm sure we'll head back again next year. april 30-may 1, it's already on my calendar! if you've never been to women of faith, i recommend you click on over now and find an event near you. you'll be so glad you did. unless you're a man, then you probably wouldn't...

camping and kayaking weekend at rocky fork

we had a ball camping this weekend at rocky fork state park. allen kayaked with a ton of kayakers at spring fling and the kids and i hung out at the campground. saturday was gorgeous and the kids played with the millers' kids and i (for once in my life) did absolutely nothing! and enjoyed it thoroughly. the kids did a little fishing, biking, kayaking, and a lot of playing in the woods. that night we had a great dinner with all of the oac and even team pyranha.
sunday it rained most of the day, but we had fun in the camper watching movies and enjoying indoor s'mores. allen kayaked rocky fork again and didn't get the rain we did. so despite a little rain, it was a pretty great first camping trip of the season for us.

kayaking and camping at rocky fork

they're off! 11 kayakers from extreme grace (including allen) took off for rocky fork for a calm, scenic float before hitting the craziness of the chutes. and another 11 campers (including the kids and me) stayed behind to enjoy this beautiful day at rocky fork state park. and yes, i'm posting this from a laptop with internet in a camper while eating a snack from the fridge. just call it extreme camping!
we'll certainly hear many great stories when the boaters return, and we'll share how the trip went. let's hope they have fun and all stay upright and dry, although the stories are so much better if they don't!

Forgotten Photo Friday

my forgotten photo for today, yeah high school graduation. (i skipped my college one. figured after "squeezing" a 4 year degree into 5 years, i couldn't stand one more day!) of course since i stopped at 28, i guess this was just 10 years ago this, and every, year. :)
notice i had authority issues even back then. i was forced to wear a dress (which you can't even see, what kind of logic is that??), but refused to wear dress shoes. they're sandalish kinda things, the least dressy i could get by with. :)
and the basketball rim is such a classy touch. personally as a photographer, i'd have checked my background first. but then it brings back a lot of memories of the bball team, so i don't mind so much.
post your own forgotten photo and tell liz about it. it's quite fun!! :)

are you going to a tea party?

just wondering if anyone else is headed to a tea party in their area? we'll be heading to dayton from 6-8pm and look forward to hanging out with at least 6,000 like-minded people! as small business owners (well, and as humans), there's a lot to be concerned about these days with crazy taxes and stimulus plans. there are tea parties across the country, you can find yours below. we're also checking out the 9-12 project. we definitely agree with the 9 principles and 12 values and think it's time for us as a country to get back to where we were on 9/12. we don't generally get political and love that these projects are non-partisan and are just plain old common sense. as a family, we're just tired of the stupidity all around.
and no worries, it's okay if you disagree. that's why america is so great! we just hope it can stay great!

Forgotten Photo Friday

after a very embarrassing show on tv of a couple from my hometown getting married, i had to choose a wedding pic for my forgotten photo friday! they were on my big redneck wedding, and NO i am not posting a link. ours was not a redneck wedding, i promise! :) while our wedding wasn't embarrassing, it is really sad the cute little girl with me in the pic (meredith francis) is in college! *sigh*
post your own forgotten photo and tell liz about it. it's quite fun!! :)

Great April Fools prank on the kids and a fun family breakfast!

Our April Fools joke went as planned and was GREAT! The kids said it was awesome! :)

Idea from James Macdonald: One year we rushed into their bedrooms at six a.m. shouting, "Get up! We're late for school!" We had changed every clock in the house to read an hour later. The kids ran downstairs, half dressed. We stuffed them in the car and rushed down the street—only to find the school parking lot empty. Kathy and I screamed, "April Fools!" and took them out for breakfast.

AND it worked perfectly! We changed all the clocks, even the computer and van. This morning Josh got up and started to get ready and I said Josh, it's late! He said my watch says it's only 7:20. I said go check a clock because your watch battery might be dying. He said OH NO MOM, IT'S 8:20! I said get ready quick! (The bus comes ~8:20.) Then we got Lizzy and Matt up in a panic because we had an "appointment" so we all frantically got dressed and out to the van. As a bonus, the bus DID go by and Josh saw it! It has an earlier route for jr high.
So we headed to school (everyone hungry since we didn't have time to eat) and there was only one van in the parking lot. Allen said looks like something's wrong, are you sure you have school? They tried to figure it out and we yelled April Fools! They couldn't believe it and said we got them good! Then we said we're going to breakfast at McDonalds and they cheered! We had a nice breakfast and got home in time for Josh to make the right bus. Quite a successful prank! :)

Last year Allen convinced them they could fly due to a weather phenomenon & they tried! But that's not the funny part. The funny part is that they believed they did fly! :)

Exciting news at DSP!

I had to share what's going on at work. It's birthday week, the most exciting week of the year! :)

NEWSFLASH

Great news, DSP is NOT participating in the recession and neither should you! When you can’t afford the big luxuries, indulge in some small ways and scrap more. Scrap every day if you’d like. Or every week or every month, but keep scrapping. Digital scrapbooking is affordable, easy, and most importantly fun! During our Scrapolution we’ve been challenged to keep you challenged. So here’s a new one!

DSP is introducing a PROJECT 365 category in the store to keep you scrapping! Whether you scrap a photo a day, a week, a month, or a year, we will provide the resources. Quickly record the details of daily life or artistically depict those special moments. Put a day, a week, or even a whole month on one page. Jot a quick note about each photo or journal your heartfelt memories. Use a PROJECT 365 quick click or instant album to make your pages quick and easy. Or try a PROJECT 365 page kit or element pack to design your own. Use the same one every time, or a different one each week or month. Make it simple or elaborate, just make it!

Be sure to post your pages to the PROJECT 365 gallery or your own personal albums. Post your ideas or questions in the PROJECT 365 forum. If you’d like to challenge yourself to take a photo every day (or week, or 9 on the 9th, it’s your goal!) post them on the DSP PROJECT 365 Flickr Group. Whatever you do and however you do it, set your goal and get scrapping!

Don’t scrap less, scrap more. Don’t think recession, think Scrapolution. Here are economically-conscious resources to make it quick and easy too! Here are some examples from the DSP designers (and see some below!). We can't wait to see yours!

Come and chat with Designer Lauren Bavin about the many options for your PROJECT 365 on Saturday!
