Firing the Lyle Gun

For the kids to work on their Jr. Ranger badges, we visited US Coast Guard Maritime Museum. We learned about shipwrecks and life saving techniques used right there. We found out they fired the Lyle Gun once a week, so we went back to watch the demo. They'd fire the (very heavy) projectile over the ship and the crew would use the ropes to send/receive equipment then finally be carried to shore by the breeches buoy. Very cool place and the kids loved the gun firing. Loud!
They got to ask questions and check out the gun afterward. Do you see Matt front & center? He had to check it out up close of course. They even got to help bring in the line, keeping it out of the sand to prevent abrasion to the rope. And yes, they did earn their Jr. Ranger badges too!
